Description: The Public Guardian is part of the NSW Trustee & Guardian. The Public Guardian is appointed by the Guardianship Division of NCAT to make health and lifestyle decisions for people with a decision making disability who are unable to make decisions on their own or with support. The guardian may make decisions on behalf of the person in areas such as accommodation; medical treatment; dental treatment or services. The Public Guardian is a substitute decision maker, not a substitute caregiver or case manager. A decision made by a legally appointed guardian should be treated as if it were a decision made by the person with disability. The Public Guardian will also advocate for the services and supports needed by the represented person. The Public Guardian also provides an Information and Support service to the community and support for people who are appointed as private or enduring guardians.
